We took my 85-year-old mother to an audiologist first, but they weren't able to complete her testing because no one there spoke Spanish. They referred us to Dr. Yadira Alonzo Espinoza, and it made all the difference. My mother adored her from the first appointment — Dr. Alonzo Espinoza explained every step to her directly in Spanish, retested her, and completed the full evaluation. We also brought in my late father's hearing aids, about ten years old, and asked whether they could be reprogrammed for my mom. She examined them carefully and was honest with us: oxidation had set in and they couldn't be reused. She had told us up front that if that happened, she sometimes receives donated hearing aids and would see whether a pair might work. She found a newer set, programmed it for my mother, tested her with them, and gave them to her at no cost. Then she took her time showing my mom how to put them in and how to charge them at night. At our follow-up, everything was working well and she showed my mother how to clean them properly. My mother chose to donate my father's old hearing aids back, and Dr. Alonzo Espinoza told us she would send them where they might still help someone overseas. That meant a great deal to my mom — knowing my father's hearing aids might still do some good for another person. Her patience with an elderly patient was remarkable, and she has been telling friends and family to go see her ever since.
